The New CGI Lion King Movie: A Thought
People angry about this think the film industry is about telling stories.
(One moment: LMAOLMAOLMAOLMAO).
Hollywood doesn't care about quality of storytelling!
Hollywood only cares about monetizing new technologies to tell familiar stories.
New technology = new novelty = new gimmick.
People buy art in America for the gimmick. People pay to experience a gimmick.
That's cool. No judgement. It's just the way it is. NOW (!!)
If the gimmick is accompanied with fine aesthetics, that art is so nice you'll like it twice.
Walt Disney first got rich selling basic ass animated stories with sync sound (the new technology / gimmick) ...
Then, by commercializing feature-length public domain fairy tales with state-of-the-art animation cell-plane photography equipment …
Now, they're pushing some new CGI hyper-realism virtual reality hair-algorithm thing.
That's the price of the ticket, not a new story. Why on earth would they experiment with a new story when all the risk is in the technology?
No no no, you stick with a story everybody already loves.
