Top 3 Films of 2018
Yeah yeah yeah, it’s officially listed as a 2017 movie… but no! I reject this label. It was given a limited release a few weeks before the end of the year, likely to qualify for various award things. But the general release was in 2018. It effected me in 2018. And the various memes & cultural influence surrounding the movie was throughout 2018.
Phantom Thread is a 2018 movie, and one of the year’s best.
Won't You be my Neighbor?
A powerful indictment against the toxicity of 2018, while maintaining a universality to its experience. This is a documentary about Mr. Rogers and his show. It uses rare archive behind-the-scenes footage that really makes you feel powerful emotions. I was surprised to learn Mr. Rogers was a devout Christian. He may've been one of the most truly effective Christians ever lol. I’m in awe of his interpretation of media ethics and the way he created that media.
A horror film released during the summer — watched via MoviePass. There’s so much to enjoy… from the first title card. A cinephile’s delight. I haven’t experienced tension like that in a movie theater in a long time. The subject matter also dealt in cults, which is a pet favorite. Loved the leap into the paranormal and the way it was set up as breaking a dreary reality; how that could be an uncanny terror unto itself: the unreal being real. Unforgettable to the last scene.
