The Best John Lennon Cover Song

The Best John Lennon Cover Song

I am OBSESSED with a cover song by The Raveonettes! They’re such a solid band, and I was SHOCKED to see this cover was recorded live in 2007!! It sounds like it was conceptualized today.

Eternal reverb, deliver us from dullness!

Their rendition is so perfect because by stripping away the song from its manic production, they’re highlighting the beauty of Lennon’s writing: His signature use of pronouns to give a sensation of intimacy between artist & listener; his simple children’s book like language; his intensely geometric twisting of sonic structure; and his malevolent wit.

This is a pretty obscure song I’ve been listening to from Lennon’s album Mind Games. It’s the album he recorded after his “lost weekend” when Yoko kicked him the fuck out.

The reason why it’s such an incredible cover is not because they out did Lennon (impossible), but that they revealed the beauty of the work by wiping off the tarnish. They found what made it beautiful, and enhanced it… and removed everything that prevented the song from being enjoyed. I now love the original more because of this rendition. I think that’s a pretty cool way to cover a song.

If you know a better cover of a John Lennon song, lemme know!
