ESCAPISM AS SOCIAL CONTROL: PART 2

High Moral Escapism serves the function of detachment. It detaches the viewer from their real world situation, and from their beingness, into one of sensual consumption. In other words, the slickness of the production values coupled with the fantasy of the story creates a gateway for the audience member to escape into - thus, losing themselves momentarily in the movie for about two hours.

This benefits a dictatorship because it significantly delays the discontent of the populace. Nobody's spirit wants to be oppressed. By offering this cathartic social valves, ordinary people who are simply fed up with living under a dictatorship are provided an opportunity to at least see exotic women on screen, or a beloved adaptation of a childhood story, or any number of thrilling scenes providing the pleasure so lacking in daily life.

High Moral Escapism also presents the Dictatorship an opportunity to subtly implant pro-State propaganda into the minds of ordinary people. By constantly reaffirming (or rejecting) certain ways of being on the movie screen, people living under dictatorships are being, essentially, BRAINWASHED - or "conditioned" - to accept a certain way of life. Of course, this method of idea indoctrination does not convert 100% of the population.

But High Moral Escapism's effect is enough, as a form of hypernormalizing brutal conditions, that it is absolutely essential in the overall control grid of any functioning dictatorship.

High Moral Escapism keeps the populace seduced, massaged, and distracted.

The more time you spend watching escapist works under a dictatorship, the less time you're planning a revolution. And the more you're exposed to the repetitious fantasy of the State.

FAMOUS EXAMPLES:

1. The U.S.A.'s Great Depression Era "Gold Diggers of 1933" (1933)

2. Soviet Union's "Ballad of Siberia" (1948)

3. Nazi Germany's "Münchhausen" (1943)

4. Iraq's "Clash of Loyalties" (1983)

5. North Korea's "Pulgasari" (1985)

6. Cuba's "Viva Cuba" (2005)

Etc etc etc. There's hundreds of other examples scattered across the 20th Century.

Given this framework, there are ample opportunities for subversion of the High Moral Escapist form. I will go over this at the end of the presentation.
