Blueprint for the 18 Year Old Radical DIY LoFi Filmmaker

Here's what I would tell a my 17 year old rebel filmmaker self, if I could go back in time:

  1. Embed yourself in a local filmmaking collective.
    Or create one.
  2. Think of yourself as a business person AND an artist.
  3. Design movies other people would love to watch.
    Then include yourself.
  4. Distribute everything you've ever made
    over & over again.
  5. Always be celebrity.
  6. Network everywhere & with everyone.
  7. Make movies that can be enjoyed TODAY
    (not in the future).
  8. Spend the majority of your time making art;
the minority of time in research.
  9. Make & market one feature film a year.
  10. Be obsessed with your current movie.
  11. Focus on the style of your movie, and not the content, until you're 30.
  12. Create a poster for every one of your films.
    Proudly hang & collect them.
  13. Read a screenplay every month.

There it is, folks.

The occult secrets to independent filmmaking.
