Movies are an Alchemy.
Alchemy was a visual metaphor for psychic phenomenon. It required the active participation of the alchemist to achieve the effect. The purpose was to reflect on the transmutation of base nature into something higher.
Likewise, cinema is the most powerful visual metaphor for psychic phenomenon.
The alchemist in this scenario, however, is not just the filmmaker.
Interestingly, it's also the spectator. The spectator is an alchemist when they actively intertwine their consciousness with the unfolding medium. By participating in the movie (with their thoughts, cognition, associations, memories, predictions, emotions, prejudices, & identifications) they transmute their raw psychic state into an uplifted / idealized / distilled one.
And, of course, it's all in service to The Great Work ~ to find the elixir vitae.
