Should I Learn Chinese or Japanese?
Man, the fuck if I know.
I barely speak a single language (English), nevertheless two (Spanish). I’m so intellectually lazy when it comes to learning a new language, it’s almost shameful.
But lately I’ve been super interested in traveling the world. My eyes are set in various spots in Latin America, but I’m also naturally fascinated by Japan — specifically Tokyo.
I fuck with Tokyo’s vibe hard. Tokyo feels like an integral part of my style without ever having visited, nor even seriously consuming Japanese content.
I mean... that’s not true. I love Japanese cinema & bands from Tokyo. But I’m not like some anime-obsessed kawaii weirdo or something.
Moving to Tokyo — even if it’s for a few months or a year — is gonna require knowing some of the language. And that’s so intimidating.
But then I got a talking with a friend of mine who’s up to date on geopolitics... And China gets brought up. Not just casually, but as the next global superpower.
So the question naturally arises...
Should I learn Japanese or Chinese?
My smart business-savvy friend was like, “If you want to make money, Chinese. If you just want to have fun, then whatever you want.”
