Body of Lies (2008)
Another Christian vs. Muslim movie directed by Ridley Scott during the George W. Bush Presidential Administration. This is a really good pot-boiler spy thriller! Probably one of my favorite #WeirdBush movies to date.
If seen back-to-back with The Kingdom of Heaven, you can conjure a really psychedelic state of consciousness. "Kingdom" is about the time between the First & Second Crusade, around 1100 AD. It features a war of civilizations — Christianity vs. Islam.
Then, with Body of Lies, you get a similar kind of movie. Except the tone is rearranged in curious ways to illicit a moody response. We jump in time almost 900 years in the future. The same war of civilizations appear to be going on; fought in relatively the same place on earth.
But now people have cars instead of horses, they talk via phones instead of messengers.
The movie itself is quite good. The dapper Jordanian intelligence guy is a fun character, the cinematography is immersive, the spy tension can be subtle, the Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani is great to watch; In fact, the only criticism I have of the movie is the miscasting of Russell Crowe — he is so obnoxious in this I can't help but almost think that actually makes him perfect for the role thus completing that circuit of energy in this well-crafted movie story.
